Why an ISBN scanner beats typing
A 13-digit ISBN is exactly the kind of string nobody wants to type twice. One mistype and your catalog entry is wrong. Phone cameras read the barcode off the back cover in under a second, even in low light, and the laptop records the value with zero manual entry.
What you need
- A laptop or tablet browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge)
- A phone with a working camera
- Books with visible ISBN-13 barcodes (every book published since 2007)
How to scan 200 books in an hour
- Open ScanSheet and pick the Library template from the top bar.
- Click Create session. Scan the QR with the phone camera.
- Walk the shelves. For each book, flip to the back cover and scan the ISBN barcode.
- Use the note column to add shelf location, genre, or condition.
- Press Export when done. The file is ready to upload to LibraryThing or your own catalog.
Tips for fast ISBN scanning
- Hold the phone about 6 inches from the book. Too close and the camera cannot focus; too far and the barcode is too small to read.
- Tilt the book slightly if the barcode is under glossy plastic. Phone cameras read through most covers.
- Scan the barcode, not the price tag. Some books have a UPC on the front and an ISBN on the back.
After the scan: enrich the data
ScanSheet captures the ISBN. To get the title, author, and cover image, paste the ISBN column into a Google Sheet and use the ISBNs as lookup keys in a service like LibraryThing, Open Library, or the Google Books API. The combined sheet is your full catalog.
