Method 3 — Google Sheets mobile app barcode scan

Open a Google Sheet in the Sheets mobile app, tap Insert → Barcode. The phone opens a camera view, scans, and drops the value into the active cell. Free, no signup, but you are stuck on a 5-inch screen for any editing and there is no auto-merge of duplicates.

Best for: a 30-item count on the go where you do not need to edit while scanning.

Method 4 — Dedicated scanner with USB HID input

Buy a $50–$300 USB barcode scanner, plug it in, open Notepad or Sheets, and let the scanner type each barcode like a keyboard. Free software, very fast, but each scanner costs money and quantity-on-re-scan is not built in — you have to count manually.

Best for: cash-register workflows or fixed scanning stations that are used daily.

Method 5 — Zapier or Make (automation, but slow)

Connect a barcode scanner app to Zapier, which then writes to Google Sheets. Powerful for custom workflows, but every scan goes through Zapier's servers (privacy concern), and the per-task cost adds up: 1,000 scans a month can cost $20+ depending on your plan.
